“YLP helped me create Shmousa Initiative, an environmental theater that aims to involve students and children to enhance their role in tackling environmental issues through entertaining workshops”
Hamzeh was a YLP4 participant, and his Shmousa Initiative led to more than 15 plays being presented using recycled materials such as paper, cardboard, cloth and wood. It has contributed to creating environmental initiatives in Jordan as it helps youth develop their talents, especially by addressing SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 13 (Climate Action). By using shadow, light and puppet theater that are based on music and movement, it becomes more attractive and fun for children.
This initiative had a concrete role in the society, where theater plays were presented at government schools and within international sustainable education programme for environmental schools (Eco-school). They reached poor and distant regions of Jordan, as well as other disadvantaged groups within the society. Decision makers were invited to attend the plays, including HRH Alia bint Hussein and many foundations and organizations interested in sustainable education and climate change.
The Shmousa initiative is currently in the pre-incubation phase of a business incubator for project development and aims to work towards achieving other SDGs.
